Education

He graduated physics master degree from the Sofia Unuversity (1950–1955), and astronomy PhD from the Institute of Physics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1958) and D.Sc. (1976)

Specialisation

B. Kovachev specialized in the observatories of Moscow University, Petersburg, Krim, Bonn, Heidelberg, Munich, Bochum and Potsdam

Research

In the field of astrophysics, he discovers and classifies over 200 new galaxies analyzing observations from a 3-meter telescope at the Calar Alto Observatory in Spain. He finds new peculiarities in the physical structure and chemical composition of single and double stars. Detects gas flow between two stars too

Professional Experience

  1. B. Kovachev was Associate Professor (1968) and Professor (1983)

  2. He was vice director of the BAS Astronomical Section (1977–1982) and director (1982–1989)

  3. He was first director of the Rozen National Astronomical Observatory (1971–1977)

  4. Director of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Institute of Astronomy (1982–1989) with National Astronomical Observatory

  5. He was chairman of the National Committee on Astronomy (1982–1989)

  6. Representative of Bulgaria to the International Astronomical Union (1982–1989)

  7. Co-founder of the European Astronomical Society

  8. He supervised the construction and operation of the National Astronomical Observatory at the Rozhen Mountain (1962–1990), which was officially opened on 31 March 1981. Potsdam Astronomical Institute donated 50/70 cm telescope. Alexander von Humboldt Fondation donated 110 000 DM.

Teaching activities

    He was university teacher on astronomy at the University of Plovdiv (1964–1965) and theoretical astronomy at the Sofia University (1966–1968)
